Emerald Bay 2008

Here is some of the basic logistical information:

  • The camp dates are 7/13/08-7/19/08.
  • Cost for kids is $515; cost for adults is $325.  Attending adults need to be there to assist the lead adult and the kids as needed.
  • $100 per camper (kid or adult) is due no later than January 14th.  Pay when you sign up to guarantee a slot.
  • Currently, there are 30 kids/5 adults slots. If Susan has commitments and deposits for all 35 slots, and more scouts or adults indicate an interest, she might be able to get more slots after 1/21/08.

As a prior attendee, I highly suggest this camp to all interested scouts and there parents. Snorkeling, swimming, canoeing, and kayaking in such a beautiful spot is very enjoyable. However, there are a few things you need to know prior to signing up:

  • Once you sign up, you are expected to pay for your spot per the payment schedule. If you decide you or your scout cannot attend, you must "sell" your spot to another troop 776 member and they then become obligated to pay for the spot.
  • This camp coincides with the middle school's summer school program. If your child is a possible candidate for summer school, you may want to consider this prior to committing.
  • After commitment, Susan will request the list of merit badge classes your scout will be attending. Typically, scouts take four or more classes. See links below for more information.
    • Note: there are material fees for several of the classes, so make sure you scout is prepared. (I helped in basket weaving and many scouts did not have the required fees and had to borrow money from their scout leaders)
  • Signed medical forms are required for all attendees (Scouts and adults). No exceptions.
  • The day of, or after, arrival, all attendees must pass a swimming test (it isn't that hard). If you fail, you cannot access the waterfront the remainder of the week. No exceptions.
  • General notes:
    • The troop is assigned a spot with enough two-man floored tents and cots to accommodate all attendees. Kids get to select there tent and tent buddy.
    • Bathrooms and showers are nearby and shared by several troops.
    • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in a dining hall.
      • Two or more "runners" are expected to set the troop's table prior to the meal, fetch drinks for the scouts, and clear the table afterwards. A "runner" schedule will be created by the SPL and posted at camp.
      • Class As are required only at dinner. You must also where your class A uniform to and from Emerald Bay.
    • There is a "War Canoe" event, where the troop will paddle large canoes to a different spot on the island, attend two snorkeling events, have sandwiches for lunch, make a hot meal over charcoal for dinner, spend the night, and paddle back the next morning.
  • Generally speaking, you need to bring a sleeping bag, 10 essentials, water shoes, toiletries/sunscreen, swim suit, shorts/shirts/shoes/socks, flashlight, fins/snorkel (but can be rented there), notebook and pen/pencil, scout book, and uniform. A chair for in camp is nice. See the links below for the full list.
  • Whatever your child brings must be in a soft, but sturdy, bag (no hard-framed back packs) and the scout must be able to carry it on to the boat and to the camp site.
    • All bags are piled into a heap onto the boat for transportation between the mainland and the Emerald Bay. They are then moved from the boat to a barge, and from there carried to the parade grounds where they are sorted by troop and taken by the scouts to their troop campsite. (if the dock is fixed this year, the second step might go away) So, please mark all bags with TROOP 776 and the scout's name. Last year we used red duct tape on the handles (with a protective piece to keep the handle from getting sticky) as an identification flag.
  • Money
    • Make sure to provide money for the classes that have material fees.
    • There is a store for candy, soda, nice ($$) Emerald Bay souvenir mugs and pocket knives, crafts items, etc. TALK TO YOUR KID ABOUT BUDGETING. Last year I saw kids buy very nice items at the beginning of the week only to sell them at the end of the week to other scouts at a huge discount just they could buy candy (not any of our kids).
