Troop 776 Boards of Review

How to prepare for a BOR for Scouts

Reminder for Non-Eagle Board of Reviews:

For the current Board of Review (BOR) calendar, refer to http://www.bsatroop776.org/. Requests for a BOR are made to bor@bsatroop776.org. Please thoroughly read the following guidelines prior to requesting a BOR.

Request to be added to the BOR Schedule as soon as possible, but no later than the Friday BEFORE the BOR. This makes it easier for the Chairperson to schedule more scouts. Requests after the Friday before the BOR will be scheduled for the next BOR.

For the Board of Review:

  • Complete a Scoutmaster conference in order to attend a Board of Review
  • For all ranks you need to bring your Boy Scout Handbook.
    • The rank advancement requirements in the Handbook will be checked for completeness during the BOR.
  • Wear your full uniform.

    • The official short-sleeved khaki Scout shirt
    • Belt and buckle
    • Neckerchief with slide
    • Appropriate Scout patches (the Scout Shop will be able to help with this)
    • Either official Scout pants or shorts, or an appropriate green colored equivalent
    • Boy Scout Handbook
    • Boy Scout hat (optional)
Guidelines for a Successful Board of Review

To advance to Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class and beyond requires that the Scout pass a BOR for each rank advancement. The Board is made up of at least three parents from the Troop. The purpose of the BOR is to confirm that the Scout is ready for advancement. This is done by the Scout answering questions asked by the BOR.
After passing the BOR, the Scout is awarded the advancement at the Court of Honor.
These questions and answers do not apply to the Eagle Rank. Eagle BORs are handled differently.
How do I know when I am ready to advance?
When you have met the requirements for the rank as listed in your Boy Scout Handbook and have had a successful Scoutmaster Conference, you are ready for a BOR. You must be up to date on your Troop dues to receive your advancement.
How do I schedule a Board of Review?
When you are ready, you should contact the BOR Chairperson (bor@bsatroop776.org) and request to have a BOR. The BOR schedule is listed on the  troop calendar (Refer to http://bsatroop776.org/).

The night of the BOR, an ordered list will be posted in the meeting trailer. The BOR is held in the main Church building, adjacent to the meeting trailer. As each scout completes their BOR, he will return to the trailer and send the next scout on the list. Those scouts should be ready to leave as soon as they see the scout return.
The BORs are given on a first come, first served basis. If the schedule is full, you will have to wait until the next scheduled BOR. Every effort will be given to provide a BOR for all scouts, but scheduling is critical.
How do I prepare for a Board of Review?
You should be prepared to answer questions about the Scouting program. Your Scoutmasters can help you prepare.

Prior to the requesting BOR you must request a Scoutmaster conference. You then need to pass and have signed off the Scoutmaster's conference prior to attending a BOR appointment.
Scoutmaster conferences are given by the Scoutmaster OR an Assistant Scoutmaster with the prior approval of the Scoutmaster. This approval is easily obtained by contacting the Scoutmaster and requesting a Green Slip.
What do I need to bring to the Board of Review?
  • Wear your full uniform.
  • For all ranks you need to bring your Boy Scout Handbook.
    • The rank advancement requirements in the Handbook will be checked for completeness during the BOR.
What happens during the Board of Review?
During introductions, while you are at attention, you may be asked to recite one or more of the following:
  • The Scout Law
  • The Scout Oath
  • The Scout Motto
  • The Scout Slogan
  • The Outdoor Code
As you advance through the ranks, the BOR Members will expect your answers to become more complete and detailed, with less emphasis on memory (oath, law, etc.) and to include your opinions about Scouting.

When all BOR members have had an opportunity to ask their questions, you will be excused from the room. The board members can then consider if advancement is appropriate. Once the decision is made, you will be invited back into the room, and the Chairperson will inform you of the board's decision.
This is the parents', who are represented by the Board of Review members, and the scout's opportunity to gain insight into the program that is being offered by the Troop. Your feedback during this process is very much a part of making the Troop better.
What if I don't pass the Board of Review?
You will be told exactly why you did not pass at this time. Your BOR will reconvene at a later date when you feel you are prepared to pass the portion of your BOR that you were deficient in. You may return to complete your BOR at a later time after you have studied.
Tips
  • Request your Scoutmaster conference as soon as possible. This can be done any time you are ready, not just when BORs are coming up.
  • Request to be added to the BOR Schedule as soon as possible, preferably no later than the Friday BEFORE the BOR. This makes it easier for the Chairperson to schedule more scouts.
  • Be sure to cancel your request should you be unable to attend the BOR as scheduled.
  • Be on time
  • Relax, try not to be nervous
  • Sit up straight, no slouching
  • Make eye contact with the person asking the question
  • Speak up, try not to mumble
  • Try to avoid using words and phrases like "you know", and "ummm" to fill the gaps in your answers
  • Think a little about each question before responding
  • Be truthful, answer each question honestly
  • Be brief, sometimes a yes or no answer is sufficient
